Willmott Dixon Interiors has completed a refurbishment of the Urology Investigation and Treatment Centre at Princess Royal Hospital on behalf of University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust (UHSUESSEX).
The £7.5 million project in Haywards Heath was procured through our Major Projects Framework 2 (MPF2) to deliver the construction of a new modular structure which will improve services and significantly expand the department's capacity.
By introducing modular units, Willmott Dixon Interiors extended the existing facility by 250 sq m, forming the superstructure of the new building.
An internal fit out has delivered specialist facilities including ultrasound, laser treatment, cystoscopy and consultancy rooms, along with a new reception area. The project also prioritised amenities for NHS staff, with separate nurse stations, storage areas, open plan office space, and training facilities.
Externally, a safe pedestrian route has been installed around the hospital perimeter, complemented by effective wayfinding and landscaping elements.
This project involved the demolition and stripping out of an existing day surgery unit, leading to the replacement of redundant services and a complete overhaul of the mechanical and electrical systems, including a new plant deck and installations.

By creating the superstructure of the building offsite, we’ve been able to significantly reduce the impact of our presence on site, with minimal disruption for hospital staff and patients. With a far lower volume of waste, this modular build has also delivered tangible sustainability benefits too.”
James Millar, Deputy Director of Capital Development and Property at UHSussex, said: “The new Urology Investigation and Treatment Centre at Princess Royal Hospital has created the extra space needed to manage patient care efficiently. We expect it to be able to accommodate an additional 2,800 patients per year, which is a significant increase on the previous capacity. The department will also be increasing the size of its clinical team to make sure as many patients as possible can benefit from these improvements.”
