This crucial project, procured through our Major Projects Framework, has transformed a previously underutilised industrial site into a modern, sustainable operational hub for the borough's waste collection and street cleaning services.
Prior to this redevelopment, Sutton's waste management operations were spread across neighbouring boroughs, leading to unnecessary travel time, increased fuel consumption, and higher emissions.
Recognising the need for a centralised and sustainable solution, the council utilised our framework, MPF2, to find the right partner for this vital project and address the inefficiencies.
Willmott Dixon successfully delivered the £8.4 million scheme, creating a fit for purpose depot equipped with 11 new EV charging points, roof-mounted solar PV panels, and heat pump systems. Their commitment to sustainability is further evidenced by the project's target of achieving a BREEAM 'Very Good' rating.
Councillor Christopher Woolmer, Chair of Sutton’s Environment and Sustainable Transport Committee, highlighted the significance of the new depot: “This totally rebuilt depot at Therapia Lane ensures that the Council can continue to reduce waste, switch to a circular economy and work towards a net zero carbon future for Sutton… This is a big step forward in making Sutton cleaner and greener.”
This project not only provides a modern base for essential services, but also supports Sutton's ambitious goal of achieving borough-wide net-zero carbon emissions by 2045. It stands as a testament to the power of strategic procurement through our Major Project Framework by enabling local authorities to deliver sustainable and impactful projects for their communities.
This project adds to Sutton's impressive track record of sustainable development, including recent high street modernisations and award winning Passivhaus schools, demonstrating a clear commitment to a greener future.
Richard Poulter, Willmott Dixon’s Managing Director in the South, emphasised their commitment: “This project reflects our commitment to sustainability and innovation. By targeting a BREEAM 'Very Good' standard, integrating energy-efficient systems, and supporting electric vehicle infrastructure, we're proud to contribute to Sutton's greener future with a modernised depot that meets the needs of today while planning for tomorrow.”
The Therapia Lane Depot project showcases how strategic investment in sustainable infrastructure, facilitated by our Major Projects Framework, can deliver tangible environmental and operational benefits for local authorities and their communities.
